Graduation Exhibition at NTUA
Eastern Gouache Painting, or Japanese Painting (pronounced as Nihonga in Japanese), is a form of art painted with mineral pigments and gel on paper or silk canvas. It is the primary medium for my graduate project in the Department of Painting and Calligraphy at NTUA.
Inspired by street graffiti, I used a Bernoulli mist sprayer to create silhouette patterns in my paintings. This sprayer allows the mineral color gel to spread evenly on the paper. The larger dots on the picture are sprayed using a regular spray bottle, and the dust dots are sprayed with a mist sprayer.
I also tried the “moriage technique” to create three-dimensional effects by slowly piling up a certain mineral powder (gofun in Japanese). I experimented with different portions of gofun and mineral pigments to make the pearls. The gofun are initially gray, and I colored them with metallic pigments to achieve the shiny colors of pearls.
